At 5,359 meters, Khardung La is the highest motorable road in the world. A sign which greets visitors upon arriving there proclaims it with a hint of pride. The realization that one is traversing through the highest motorable road is in itself as exciting as it gets.
Khardung La is a high altitude mountain pass located almost 40 kilometers from Leh, and is the gateway to Shyok & Nubra Valleys. It has an enormous strategic importance for India, as it is used to transport supplies to the Siachen Glacier.
The Khardung La Pass, a major tourist place in Ladakh, is maintained by the Border Roads Organisation and all kinds of vehicles, from two wheelers to heavy trucks, ply this road.
Itinerary
On arrival at Leh Airport you will be met, assisted and get driven to Leh hotel. On arrival, check-in at your hotel. Located at an elevation ranging between 7545 and 16404 feet above sea level, Leh is utterly a mountainous region, with three equivalent Himalayan ranges – Karakoram, Ladakh and Zanskar. After Kutch in Gujarat, Leh in Jammu and Kashmir is the second largest district in India. This place known for its stunning sceneries of extroverted valleys and snow-capped mountains, beckons flock of travelers every year. After breakfast proceed for in & around sightseeing of Leh, visiting Spituk Monastery, erected in the 15th century at the era of Grags ‘bum-lde. After that visit the Gelug-pa monastery, erected as a fortress on the summit of crags and also visit Hall Of Fame lies near Leh. In the afternoon, you will be visiting the Shankar Gompa, situated at an aloofness of approximately 3 km from the town of Leh. And then in the evening stroll towards market, Namgyal hill Lhasa’s Potala Palace. Dinner & Overnight stay at hotel in Leh.
Afte breakfast, get driven to Khardung La (The Highest Motorable Road in The World) at 5,602 Mtrs. 18,380 Ft, around 39 km from Leh. From the pass, one can see all the way south over the Indus valley to seemingly endless peaks and ridges of the Zanskar range, and north to the giants of the Karakoram Range. The views from the top of the pass are extremely incredible. Return to the hotel on time for lunch. In the afternoon you can stroll around the market place for some last minute souvenir shopping. After breakfast, check-out form the hotel and get driven to Leh Airport for onward journey.
